Car Hire in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Explore at Your Own Pace

Explore Bosnia and Herzegovina at your own pace. Discover the driving rules and book a car with unlimited mileage and zero insurance excess through AsovicTravels.

A coffee stop in Konjic, an afternoon in Mostar or an extra break for a view you discover along the way. Hiring a car lets you explore Bosnia and Herzegovina at your own pace and shape each day around your interests.

At AsovicTravels, we help with both your car and inspiration for the journey. Here is what to expect from our car hire and what you should know before driving.

Clear rental terms and zero insurance excess

When you hire a car through us, you always get:

  • Good-quality, newer cars across all vehicle classes.
  • Unlimited mileage, giving you freedom to explore.
  • Insurance with zero excess for damage covered by the policy.
  • Only a small fuel deposit, released when you return the car with the agreed fuel level.

We focus on clear arrangements to help you avoid unpleasant surprises. Your vehicle class, price, insurance terms and any optional extras are agreed in advance. Your bank’s processing time may affect when the released deposit becomes available again.

Collect your car in Sarajevo, Mostar or Tuzla

We offer cars across all vehicle classes for collection at three international airports:

  • Sarajevo Airport (SJJ)
  • Mostar Airport (OMO)
  • Tuzla Airport (TZL)

Tell us where you are arriving, how many people are travelling and how much luggage you have. We will help you choose a suitable car. Let us know if you would like an automatic or need a child seat.

Is a Danish driving licence valid?

Yes, a valid Danish driving licence is accepted for an ordinary holiday visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It must cover the category of vehicle you drive.

Bring your physical licence. Denmark’s digital driving licence app is valid only in Denmark. Also carry your passport and the documents provided with the rental car.

Rental companies may have minimum age and driving experience requirements. We clarify these when arranging your booking. Travellers with licences issued elsewhere should check the requirements for their licence.

What is driving like?

Traffic drives on the right. Road conditions vary, and smaller roads can be narrow, winding and poorly maintained. A short distance on the map may take longer than expected.

Drive defensively, leave plenty of space and be prepared for overtaking and drivers who do not follow the rules. Plan your journeys during daylight and avoid driving outside major towns and cities after dark.

Allow time for breaks and park safely when stopping to enjoy the scenery. Do not leave valuables visible in the car.

Speed limits in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The general limits for ordinary passenger cars are:

  • 50 km/h in built-up areas.
  • 80 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas.
  • 100 km/h on roads reserved for motor vehicles and expressways.
  • 130 km/h on motorways.

Always follow road signs and adjust your speed to the road, weather and visibility. New drivers are subject to additional, lower limits during the first two years after their licence is issued.

Alcohol and driving

The general blood alcohol limit is 0.3‰, equivalent to 0.03% BAC. A zero limit applies to drivers under 21 or with less than three years of driving experience. It also applies to certain other groups, including professional drivers while working.

Our advice is simple: Do not drink alcohol when you will be driving. Save wine, beer and rakija for a day when the car stays parked.

Other rules to know

  • Wear seat belts in both front and rear seats.
  • Use dipped headlights or approved daytime running lights during the day. Use appropriate lighting after dark and in poor visibility.
  • Do not use a handheld phone while driving. Set your navigation before leaving.
  • Arrange a suitable child seat or booster when travelling with children.
  • Winter equipment is compulsory from 1 November to 1 April. Confirm suitable equipment for your dates and route.
  • Arrange cross-border travel in advance if you plan to visit neighbouring countries.
