For many travellers, a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina starts with one question: Is it safe?
Most Danish visitors travel through the country without problems, according to Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its guidance recommends staying alert throughout the country. That is a useful starting point, alongside understanding the specific risks relevant to your itinerary. Read the Danish travel advice for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At AsovicTravels, we want you to feel informed, prepared and ready to explore.
Why do people still associate the country with danger?
For many people, Bosnia and Herzegovina still brings to mind the war of 1992 to 1995. Images of the siege of Sarajevo left a lasting impression, including on people who have never visited.
The war ended in 1995. Its history remains an important part of the country, but it does not tell the whole story of travelling here today.
There are also coffee breaks in Baščaršija, small craft shops, mountain landscapes and conversations over a meal. Leave room for both the history and the everyday life you encounter along the way.
Transport and travel insurance
Take particular care on the roads. Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlights serious traffic accidents and advises against driving outside major cities after dark.
Arrange travel insurance that covers your planned activities. For Danish travellers, neither the yellow Danish health insurance card nor the blue European Health Insurance Card provides cover in Bosnia and Herzegovina. See the Danish travel guidance and check your own policy before departure.

A rewarding trip leaves room for preparation and unexpected moments. Yours might be a conversation over Bosnian coffee, a guided walk through Sarajevo or a meal you want to recreate at home.
