Packing list: What to bring on a hiking holiday in Bosnia

From layers to water bottles — the complete packing list for the Dinaric Alps, tested by our guides.

Mountain views, a lunch break beside the trail and enough energy to enjoy the final stretch. A good hiking holiday starts with a backpack that holds what you need and feels comfortable to carry.

Mountain weather in Bosnia and Herzegovina can change quickly. Sunshine in the valley does not guarantee warmth higher up, and even summer hikes call for protection against wind, rain and chilly breaks.

Use this packing list for a guided hiking holiday, adapting it to the season, difficulty and accommodation in your itinerary.

Čvrsnica and Prenj: Prepare for mountain terrain

If you are heading to Čvrsnica and Prenj, prepare for rocky paths, uphill stretches and longer descents. Routes vary in difficulty, and some require good fitness and confidence on uneven ground.

On our hiking journey through Prenj and Čvrsnica, mountain scenery and hut stays are central to the experience. Suitable boots, warm layers and a comfortable backpack make a real difference.

Footwear: Break in your boots before travelling

  • Broken-in hiking boots with good grip and support suited to the terrain and your feet.
  • 3 to 4 pairs of hiking socks made from wool or moisture-wicking material.
  • Light shoes or sandals for evenings at your accommodation.
  • Blister dressings and sports tape, ready to use as soon as rubbing starts.

Test your footwear and socks together on longer walks before departure. Your boots should cover their first kilometres at home, rather than on your first mountain day.

Clothing: Dress in layers

You should be able to remove layers during a climb and stay warm when stopping.

  • Moisture-wicking base layers in wool or synthetic fabric.
  • A fleece or warm wool layer for breaks and cool mornings.
  • A windproof, waterproof shell jacket and waterproof trousers.
  • Hiking trousers that allow movement and dry quickly.
  • A warm hat, light gloves and neck warmer, even in summer.
  • A sun hat or cap for exposed stretches.
  • Dry clothes for the evening.

Avoid cotton next to your skin on longer hiking days, as it dries slowly. Keep spare clothing in waterproof bags.

Daypack and equipment

For guided day hikes, a 25 to 30-litre daypack is often a useful starting point. It should hold your water, food, waterproofs and a warm layer.

Also pack:

  • A headtorch with a charged battery or spare batteries.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
  • Walking poles, if you use them. They can help on longer descents.
  • Your phone, charging cable and power bank.
  • Personal medication and a small first-aid kit.
  • An emergency blanket and whistle.
  • A small rubbish bag to carry your waste out.

If you need to carry a sleeping bag and overnight equipment between huts, you may need a larger backpack. We clarify this for your particular trip.

Water and energy for the day

Bring bottles or a hydration bladder with capacity for at least 2 litres of water. Hot weather and longer stages may require 3 litres or more. Adjust the amount to the route, conditions and confirmed refill points.

Do not assume you can buy water along the trail or that every spring will be flowing. Ask your guide where you can refill and whether the water needs treatment.

Carry extra snacks, such as nuts, dried fruit or a cereal bar. They are useful even when meals are included.

Staying in mountain huts

Mountain huts have different facilities from hotels. Check what is available before deciding what to pack.

You may need:

  • A sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner, depending on the hut and itinerary.
  • A small, quick-drying towel.
  • Earplugs for shared sleeping areas.
  • Small toiletries.
  • Some cash in local currency.

A liner does not replace a sleeping bag where one is required. For our Prenj and Čvrsnica trip, bring a sleeping bag or arrange to rent one.
